I thought i’d take a moment to craft a lengthier message congratulating my dear friend bono on being the first man to receive glamour magazine’s man of the year award this is why I love that he has been recognized in this way bono has been my most exemplary teacher in how to use all the power you possess for good working with his deeply effective one campaign has taught me so much about how to be an activist in particular his povertyissexist campaign which I have been a part of over the last two years is the first of its kind to give explicit language to the crippling nature of the gender gap I admire bono’s approach to this work doing all he must do boldly and unrelentingly to get those with power to know to care and to understand what they can do to make a true difference the list of all the issues affecting the most vulnerable in the world that he strives to address goes on and on but one I will highlight is this I grew up in southern africa in the 80s and the 90s I witnessed the onslaught of hiv aids on families work by many including bono has allowed affordable drugs to be available to many more people than when I was growing up when it was basically a death sentence I see the difference drug access has made every time I return home especially for women who are the hardest hit by the epidemic and often the least empowered these people helped to save and prolong many women’s lives and celebrate several astounding african women’s efforts that would otherwise go unrecognized I must also highlight the time he helped me kick off my knowhername campaign as a part of my broadway play eclipsed it was crucial to me that we use the play as a platform for activism around girls who have been abducted and caught in conflict zones despite an insanely busy schedule he carved out the time to make it to the play and launch the campaign his ingenious addition was to have the audience speak aloud the names of the girls we highlighted it was a unique experience to see a broadway audience speak in unison to hear them speak the names of african girls who have been abducted during a war became a great awareness tool and without bono s generosity of time and effort we would not have had that component to me one of his most powerful traits is his humility I recently attended a poverty is sexist event with him in montreal on a panel he spoke of how he had asked his daughter if he qualified as a feminist he hoped he was one but deeply understands that it is a title one must achieve through their actions he spoke of how he would continue to strive to do just that for me the answer is simple a feminist is someone who believes that women deserve as equal a shot at reaching their potential as men and who invests their energy in making that possible bono you are a feminist thank you for the astounding example you set and congratulations on the glamour magazine recognition sometimes I feel men are almost scared to step into the arena of advocating for women unsure of where and how they would fit with the example you set they can learn it’s a rock star thing to do.
